It’s tempting to set the mood on Valentine’s Day often with a selection of candles in your favorite place, but candle alternatives may provide the right mood without any of the fire safety concerns. Love is a wonderful thing, but regular candles can quickly move your wooing from starting a flame in someone’s heart to catching the drapes on fire.
At People’s Trust, we want you to celebrate safely and advocate never using candles.
According to fire safety experts, more than 15,000 fires are started by candles each and every year. Even more surprising, at least 1,200 people this year will head to a doctor or emergency room with a candle-related injury.
To help keep your love safe and happy, decorate with candle alternatives that mirror the look and mood of a regular candle. Some of our favorite alternatives include battery-operated flameless candles and fragrance warmers.
Flameless Candles: There are a wide range of flameless candles, typically using LED lights, that can mirror your favorite style of candle. There are currently battery-operated and plug-in candles that come in forms similar to sconces, votive candles, decorative candles with colored or pictured outsides, and even units that combine a taper candle and holder. These provide no warmth but can give different colors and lighting, some of which have a realistic flickering effect.
Fragrance Warmers: There are a variety of different fragrances and wax warmers that provide the same smell as a candle without the danger of an open flame. These often use a low-watt bulb or heating element that’s contained inside a unit that prevents the element from overheating – many also include a “kill switch” that activates if an element gets too hot. These warmers work with wax you buy separately or sometimes with candles, but make sure to remove the wick!
These alternatives can give you all of the benefits of a candle without any of the dangers. Stay safe and keep Valentine’s as a day for Cupid not a day for a claim.
