Take Time to Review Your Homeowner’s Insurance
We’re pretty good about getting ourselves to the doctor every year and the dentist every six months or so, but how often do you check up on your insurance policy?
It’s a great idea to give your homeowner’s insurance policy a review at least once a year to understand what coverage you have and what your goals are. Our lives change, and so do our needs, so it can be great for you to take stock and see if your insurance matches what you have going on.
How Much Coverage Do You Need?
Your home is likely your biggest investment, and it needs to be protected against loss and damage to avoid hitting your wallet hard when something bad happens.
Your insurance coverage should have initially been made large enough to cover the cost of rebuilding if your home is destroyed, and you can make a claim. But, if you’ve made improvements to your home, built new buildings on your property, or had any other major renovations, the value of your home may have changed.
Why Should You Do a Home Inventory?
Homeowners’ policies have limited coverage for specific items such as jewelry, watches, and precious stones. Many policies can have additional coverage, so speak with a sales representative to see what protections are available to add on.
To help determine your need, you should take an inventory of the valuables in your home. Having an inventory with values and receipts will help you recover from losses, including theft. We suggest you add photos and serial numbers to your inventory to keep the best record of your goods.
If you’re a good videographer, you can also take a video camera and walk through your home room-by-room to show the items you own and where they’re stored. Narrating the video with information such as value, description, and where you purchased the item from, will create a perfect inventory for your safety.
Take this video and store it safely somewhere, either in your home or in a safety deposit box. You can also give it to a family member or someone you trust.
Is My Home Business Covered?
Thanks to the Internet, more and more people are working out of their homes these days. However, most of the devices that you’ve purchased for your business is typically not covered by your homeowner’s insurance.
Items that you’ve purchased for business purposes – such as computers, file cabinets, products, inventory, and sales items – must to be covered separately from any homeowner’s policy.
Look Beyond Price
Price is always a big comparison point, but we invite you to look at each insurer’s record on customer service and quality when you consider your coverage. Claims service is a big part of the relationship. You need a partner that you trust to help you through the claims process and repair or replace everything that’s covered by your policy.
Our goal is to make your homeowner’s insurance and claims process as simple as possible so that you get your home back without any extra difficulty. Catastrophes that take our home must be resolved with compassion and quick action, and that’s what People’s Trust delivers.
