Home is a place to relax and enjoy spending time with your family. We never want to think about the bad things that can happen, but it’s important to take precautions to protect the ones that are most important to us. We know your priority is to keep your family safe at all times, and it’s our priority to help you with this. Home safety refers to the awareness of risks and potential dangers in and around a home that may cause bodily harm, injury, or death to those residing in and around the physical structure of a home. It includes mitigating or preventing unwanted dangers throughout your home.
Using the basic home safety tips we have provided below can help protect you and your family. While these tips are just a start to a long list of precautions that are important to take to keep your family and home safe, this is a good way to start. Use this as a checklist to make your home safer.
The following are some basic home safety tips that People’s Trust Insurance Company recommends you follow to keep you, your family, and your home safe at all times. Of course, these are just a few guidelines – and do not substitute for good common sense.
- Check your smoke alarms on a regular basis to make sure they are operable, and change the batteries as necessary. Keep a fire extinguisher and smoke detector on every floor. For bigger floors, have multiple smoke detectors and fire extinguishers as necessary.
- Don’t open your front door to people you don’t know or are not expecting. This is how burglars gain access to your home. If you are not expecting someone who claims to be from a particular company, call that company and ask them before letting someone in your home.
- Keep your doors, garage, and windows locked at all times. Don’t hide keys outside – or use a keypad for the garage.
- Don’t leave tools out in your yard that can become a hazard to you or visiting guests to trip on. This also includes children’s toys in the yard. If you have a pool, make sure you have a safety fence around it at all times.
- Don’t overload electrical outlets, as this can start a very serious fire. Be sure to use a safe power strip with surge protection and unplug appliances when they are not in use.
- Keep furniture away from windows so that children can be prevented from tumbling out an open window.
- When cooking, don’t leave your stove unattended. Keep stove surfaces free of clutter and remove built up grease.
- Change your hose on the back of your washing machine and toilets to no-burst hoses – this can help prevent water damage from occurring in your home. Make sure to turn off your water prior to replacing the hoses.
- Set a timer on your lights when you are going to be away from your house. This will make people think you are home and hopefully keep away unwanted intruders.
- If you have an alarm, use it when you are home or when you are away from your home.
- If you’re going away on vacation, ask a neighbor to check daily for flyers stuck in your front door. Cancel the newspaper for the days you will be away.
