Recall Nest Protect Smoke Detector

nest smoke detectorNest Stops Sales and Issues Warning about Its Nest Protect

Nest has temporarily stopped the sale of its Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm because of the potential for the detector to be turned off and not signal a warning in the event of a real fire.

The company has provided an update for its smoke detectors, which are designed to connect to the Internet, and is providing owners with a download to make the product safer. The Nest uses your Wi-Fi to download an update that will disable the feature. Those unable to make the update can receive an immediate refund from the company.

Nest CEO Tony Fadell said that the company’s testing laboratory determined a “unique combination of circumstances” that created the risk but noted that no customer has made a complaint about the danger.

Affected Product Name

The only product impacted by the warning is the Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm. The update or recall affects every Nest Protect that has been sold.

Potential Hazards

In an effort to make smoke detectors less of a hassle, Nest developed a sensor that allows you to wave your hand at the detector and turn it off – initially designed to make turning off the noise easy in case cooking gets smoky but does not start a fire.

According to the recall letter from Fadell, available here, this waving feature can be unintentionally activated and could prevent the alarm from sounding in the event of a real fire.

“We identified this problem ourselves and are not aware of any customers who have experienced this, but the fact that it could even potentially happen is extremely important to me and I want to address it immediately,” writes Fadell.

The company provides an FAQ for the hazards to address other questions.

Fixing the Danger

While Nest works on a fix to the problem, it suggests disabling the wave-control feature. To disable the feature, there’s a download available for the smoke detector. Depending on how you’ve set your Nest up, there are different steps to disable the option:

  • If you have a Nest Protect Account and a Wi-Fi connection: Your Nest will automatically download the update and disable the Nest Wave feature. You do not need to take any action.
  • If you do not have a Nest Account:  Follow the standard instructions to connect your Nest and set up an account. Once the account is active, the Nest will download the update and disable the feature.
  • If you do not have a Nest Account or cannot connect your Nest to a Wi-Fi network: Stop using the product immediately. If you are unable to find a Wi-Fi connection, use this form to claim a complete refund for the device.

To confirm that your Nest has disabled the Wave feature, access your account on the Nest website or one of its mobile apps. Select the Nest in your “Nest Protects” list and navigate to the Nest Wave option. This screen will have an “Off” icon to let you know the Nest Wave feature is turned off and you can use the device.

Company Contact Information

If you have any trouble or questions in completing the update, contact Nest Customer Support at 1-800-249-4280.  For more information you can read the recall letter or see the information and replacement page from Nest.
